In
the words of Andy:
I just bought an early 80s Gazelle and have really
been enjoying your site as I knew nothing about these great bikes
before I fell in love with this one..
It has the Roto bottom bracket, stamped with "GAZELLE"
and the serial number. Because of a scratch it was hard to read
the 4th digit. At first I read it 3213012, but your database suggests
that this would make it late 70's, and that doesn't fit with the
script version of "Champion Mondial" and the early 80s
531c decal among other things. It must be 3243012, which, based
on the photos of the other bikes in your database, would be more
consistent with others with SNs in that range on the site.
It has a full chrome fork with a sloping crown embossed with the
Gazelle logo on top. It also has the striped Campy braze-on pantograph
shifters with the logo and the tubular brake bridge with the Gazelle
logo on top.
It apparently was originally purchased in Europe, as it has a sticker
that reads:
RIJWIELSPECIAALZAAK
KO v. BREUKELEN
Rijnlaan 28
UTRECHT TEL. 881614
Sadly the pedals, cogset and (probably) wheels aren't original,
but all the rest is Campagnolo Record (hubs) or Super Record. Seat
is a Concor Superleggera Confort. Stem and bars are Cinelli. |

And my comments:
From the time before the (hideous) fade paint jobs
of the eighties comes this very pretty frame. It exudes classic
racing bike in its stunning looks.
Beyond the surface of chrome and lacquer and tasteful
decals this IS indeed a classic racing bicycle. A Champion Mondial
with the tight AA geometry and ROTO bottom bracket upgrade, adorned
a (near) complete Campagnolo Super Record group set, well, that's
about as good as it gets for that era.
Hear that, Colnago-istas? |
