The Nose, June 1989
Not a particularly good shot of Geoff Pryor on the last hanging belay,
below the summit overhangs. Geoff, from Baltimore, was my partner
on the road to climb El Cap for the first time. We met in Camp Four,
after both of us had sorted thru the riff-raff of wannabe aid climbers
and resident hardmen. I didn't want to team up with some experienced
wall rat that would carry the whole load, and the same time trying
to dodge the obviously hopeless specimens. Judging a persons character
and true abilities in a 5 minute conversation is tricky. Geoff and
I hit it off and we went at it the classic way, starting out on the
Column, then Half Dome and finally the Big Stone. The preps paid off.
On the Nose we felt nicely in control of things, weren't too wasted
and did good time. |
