Pass Trail to Mt. Whitney - Page two |
Route
description |
 |
We reached the pass
in the full glare of the midday sun, meaning washed out colors
and little contrast in the images.
Despite the low photographic quality one can make out Colby
Lake and the deep hole of Cloud Canyon.

A view in the other
direction, to the south east, with the group descending toward
the Kern Kaweah River. This quiet, remote watercourse run
from right to left in the obvious trench just beyond the bench
we're on. The massive peak on the extreme right skyline may
be Mt. Kaweah.

 |
The braided run of
the Kern Kaweah River as it fans out in a big meadow near
Gallats Lake. Picket Guard is the peak, a mere 12300' .
|
 |
After coming down
the canyon on the other side of the near conifers, we turned
north at Junction Meadow, and are now hiking along the upper
Kern. We are looking for the junction with the trail up to
Wallace Creek camp and the John Muir Trail
The pinnacles in background are the awesome main spires of
the Kaweah Group, with Black Kaweah, 13765' on the left.

 |
Approaching the camp
before the attempt on Mt. Whitney, we come upon beautiful
little Timberline Lake. This area have sustained a fair bit
of overuse in the past and is now closed to camping (2004).
The hulk dominating the background is indeed Mt. Whitney.,
The route to the summit goes near the crest of the shady ridge
on the right.
On the very right of the photo is Mt. Hitchcock.
