| High
Sierra Trail to Mt. Whitney - Page three |
Route
description |

|
On day 6 you climb
out of the massive Kern Canyon, seen here running for miles
to the south. The entry two days earlier was downstream around
the bend a long ways.
|

|
As one climbs up along
Wallace Creek towards the Sierra Crest, the remote backside
of the Great Western Divide gets into view to the west. Picket
Guard is the obvious pyramid. The setting moon is there too.
The Colby Pass trail, mentioned here,
comes down the canyon from the right in front of PG. See also
here for a view of this peak from the other side.

|
From Upper Crabtree
Meadow is the first good look at Mt. Whitney, the dome shaped
gray hulk in the center of the photo. Crabtree is one of the
camps.
|

|
Approaching the exposed
and desolate Guitar Lake on day 7, with afternoon clouds gathering.
In fact, later on this day a huge thunderstorm did strike
us at the
11400' high lake.
The west side of Mt. Whitney to the right. The jagged peak
sticking up in the low pass left of center is Mt.
Russell.

Aftermath of the violent
thunderstorm mentioned above. Guitar Lake camp.
