High Sierra Trail to Mt. Whitney - Page four Route description

On the way to the top of Mt. Whitney. After reaching Trailcrest at 13500' one is faced with almost 2 miles of rising traverse like this before summiting the 14496' mountain.
This view is down trail, to the south, with the summit area behind the photographer.

The summit of Mt. Whitney is a large rounded plateau, rather unspectacular until peering over the sheer east side.
The peaks around Forester Pass on the John Muir trail in the background.

Descending into the rocky cirques on the east side of the mountain, via the socalled 100 switchbacks. Consolation Lake in the center.

Mt. Thor from the last camp, in the morning on day 9 before the final stretch to Whitney Portal.

The east side of Mt. Whitney from the road leading down to Lone Pine. Or maybe this is from the trail to the Portal. Sorry, don't remember.
